'obscur is a language for the creator, a language intended to express a certain view of the world and a reaction. a reaction to the impureness and inconsistency that surrounds us'

Born in Helsingborg in the south of Sweden, Richard Söderberg spent his childhood moving around frequently. Raised in a rather controlled environment, he developed an anti-statement mentality towards everything, a feeling which he kept inside while showing a normal face on the outside.

Instead of sulking and withdrawing to his dark feelings though, Richard has preferred to turn them into something productive. His ambition and drive in everything he gets involved with has resulted in the birth of a label, Obscur, through which he expresses his feelings and personality in the form of garments.

Richard creates clothes after absorbing the spirit of the dark and misty landscapes of his home country.His deep love of dark Scandinavian music is also of great inspiration and has been translated into the garments.

Draped fabrics, washed leathers and muted colours provide the signature elements to his work. He uses an array of linens, wools, cottons and leathers, developing new fabrics by melting them together or blending dyes and structures. He is also known to explore surfaces and insides,dye processes and fits,rather than shapes and silhouettes.

Exposing layers of raw edges, garments are double or tripled layered sometimes combining rigid materials with softer ones fusing leather with sheer fabrications.A raw and naked finish is often used to expose the handcraft within the garment.Treated and hand-altered leather is commonly used as it is in authentic, traditional scandinavian clothes.

Richard is to some extent trying to create all-round key garments that can easily worn by different personalities to create the perfect balance of an outfit heavy and stiff materials create beautiful armour on the outside with a soft inner core.

To quote his manifesto:

Obscur is not about being drawn to extremes, but rather an urge to refine classic silhouettes to perfection. Honest and powerful expression reveals the true design behind the garments, and therefore minimal styling is required. Achieving a pure esthetic can be difficult as there are many elements to consider.

Born in Jerusalem, raised in Australia, and currently based in Reykjavik - Iceland, Sruli Recht is an award winning fashion designer like no other.

His latest collection is entitled "Cast by Shadows"

“This collection is based on the view from my window: water, mountains, mist.” – Sruli Recht

The collection in three words – draped, refined, digital.

All garments are made in-house in Iceland.

The majority of the garments are constructed from one pattern piece and one piece of material, where the width of the material allows.

In the case of the shirts, the cuff and placket come from the same piece of fabric as the sleeve, which is also part of the body and collar.

The Natural Selection Denim collection is inspired by the uniforms of men working on the railroad, from officers to labourers. Hailing from London's Shoreditch, Natural Selection Denim is the result of the hands of a craftsman, the eye of a designer, and the heart of an artist, Paul Young.

With features such as high quality Japanese denim interwoven with Zimbabwean cotton, the attention to detail is truly outstanding. One of the brands sources of inspiration is to embrace the heritage that denim and work wear has. These references are present in details such as the hidden rivets, top centre button stitch and the selvedge fabrics woven traditionally by hand.

Three main symbols in the leather patch sybolize the craftsmanship behind their work....

The Penny Farthing - a great contribution to the industrial revolution that influenced the work wear design element of the brand.

The Pheasant - a British bird, with distinctive colouring & intricate patterned feather detail that represents the detail, innovation & fabric selections so important to the brand.

The Ornate Floral design - This can be found engraved on the side of a shotgun barrel handmade in England.

Natural Evolution.

The idea the guys wanted to portray in the name of the brand was to suggest the evolution process - referencing the evolution of denim as a fabric, from a raw/ dry indigo, right through to an aged/ damaged finish- whether naturally by the user or artificially by hand - it is an evolutionary process.

Natural Selection.

The brand is based in the UK but uses Japanese Denim from the Okayama region and an Italian Denim Mill in the production process.The guys have a studio and showroom in Shoreditch London. This is where the entire process happens from research and planning, development and production then to sales. They are a small family and have a hands on approach at every stage of the process- a little like us here at Fallow...

Anndra Neen is the winner of the 2011 Dorchester Collection Fashion Prize

The label received USD $40,000 from Dorchester Collection as well as the opportunity to display their work at Dorchester Collection’s iconic Hôtel Plaza Athénée during Paris Fashion Week in 2012.

After a tense deliberation period, the judges agreed that the collection displayed by Anndra Neen best evoked the spirit of individuality, luxury, style and craftsmanship, which characterizes Dorchester Collection’s iconic hotels. Their work also demonstrated critical distinction and the potential for future commercial success.

“Being there at the beginning of people’s careers to help support them is something I truly enjoy and Anndra Neen displayed a multi-cultural talent of mixing art with fashion, which is timely. They are two empowered women who have created a family business and have a real depth of talent,” said Elizabeth Saltzman, judge of Dorchester Collection Fashion Prize. “Dorchester Collection has created a Fashion Prize that provides a strong foundation for upcoming designers to build their brand on.”

Fallow is proud to present the jewelry and accessories brand Anndra Neen established by siblings Phoebe and Annette Stephens in 2009. The inspiration of the hand-crafted, original pieces they conceive from mixed metals are diverse and informed by the childhood they spent in Mexico surrounded by art and legendary artists. The Stephens sisters make their jewelry in a workshop in their native Mexico City.

Their grandfather, Louis Stephens, was a textile producer in New York who met and eventually married a muralist named Annette Nancarrow, settling in Mexico, though he also had connections to Martha’s Vineyard and Manhattan. Phoebe, 32, and Annette, 28, have different mothers, but as the two girls among five siblings, they were close. They went to college in the Boston area and then worked in New York, Annette as a fledgling actress and Phoebe in television and public relations. A trip to Japan caused them to change course. It wasn’t one thing, Annette said, but the Japanese respect for crafts impressed them. They immediately flew to Mexico City and met with a metal craftsman they had heard about.

Yara Flinn is the 28-year-old designer of New York-based fashion line Nomia, which launched with its first collection in Spring 2007.

A schooled video artist and sculptor who attended Oberlin College, Yara began experimenting with clothing design while studying there- combining her love of art and fashion through multimedia fashion shows/installations, and video projects.

After graduating Yara worked at the Fondazione Prada, a contemporary art non-profit run by the Italian fashion house. At this time she also began an internship with the forward thinking, art influenced label United Bamboo.The sculptural approach Yara takes to designing her collections is informed by her studies of draping and patternmaking at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York.

The focus of the Nomia collection is to create artistic, directional pieces with an edge that leave the wearer feeling strong, chic, sophisticated and empowered.

All of the garments are produced in New York City and are available exclusively in Australia at Fallow.

A note from Andrew..

Andrew McDonald shoemakers was established in 1992. Started By Andrew in a small workshop in Sydney’s Surry Hills designing bespoke handcrafted shoes for men and women.

His skill and artistry were quickly recognised and Andrew was soon to be awarded a Churchill Fellowship in 1996 to understudy master shoemakers, John Lobb of London and Paul Harnden shoemakers.

On his return to Sydney, Andrew opened his current shop/workshop in Paddington. Founded on his craftsmanship and design exploration. The team comprises a dedicated group of shoemakers at the forefront of footwear and accessories design.

We asked Andrew for a little more detailed information to pass onto you, here's what he shared with us......

Reverse Black Foldover

Dear Fallow,

As you probably know I trained at JOHN LOBB bespoke in St James in London. Training with the best has taught to me to use the best possible construction methods and materials that are environmentally sustainable.

So here is a breakdown of the material composition of my shoes...

Upper and Lining

All our upper and lining leathers are vegetable tanned horse or calf hides. Vegetable tanning improves the tensile strength making it softer and more breathable. This process is non toxic.

Nearly all of the English manufacture footwear employing chromic tanning (highly toxic) processes with their leathers. Chromic tanning is faster and cheaper and eventually breaks down the leather.

Sole

We are one the few select makers that use Oak bark tanned soling stock. It is extremely hard wearing tough as well as flexible. It is highly water repellent and especially breathable, biodegradable and emits a pleasant oak bark perfume when wearing.

Insole

Vegetable tanned shoulder leather

Welt stitched sole construction

All our soles use hemp thread as opposed to a waxed cotton thread for stitching our soles. Hemp thread does not rot and is impermeable to water. Waxed cotton eventually absorbs moisture (as used by church etc) and rots when water and dirt is trapped in the fibres.

Heel

My heels are made with veg tanned butt hide leather and hand layered piece by piece (not a heel unit nailed to the sole). We use brass nails to reinforce the heel block and Stoltz German rubber top pieces.

Stiffeners

Toe and heel stiffeners are shoulder leather as opposed to fibreboard which eventually cracks and deteriorates with perspiration.

Make

My shoes are a truly handmade product, made using the best materials sourced from around the world using traditional hand crafting techniques in my small workshop in Paddington, Sydney.

These differences are subtle, but to the trained eye and discerning customer mean the difference between a good shoe and a great shoe.

Marco Cavazzana is a creative director specializing in a multitude of digital art forms. The Venetian born artist has been featured in numerous modern art & design books and has worked on worldwide advertising campaigns. Raised and educated in Australia, his background in IT engineering / Media helped fuse his technological bond with his artistic expression. In early 2007, he approached photographer Morgan Norman and shortly after they formed the creative photography firm Norman Cavazzana.

Next season, Fallow will be presenting a new collection exclusive to us in Brisbane by Swedish label Obscur.

Christopher Brosius of CB I HATE PERFUME felt passionate enough about the lack of inspiring perfumes that he dedicated his career to creating scents that are truly unique.

CB I HATE PERFUME is a Brooklyn based perfumery that has been operating since 1992.

Christopher’s perfumes are created to be an “Experience” rather than a simple accessory .

The smoke of burning maple leaves - pure & simple.

The Story...

Do you know what a leaf fort is? It's simply a huge pile of fallen leaves carefully raked up, on top of which a group of children sit defending the pile against another group. Battle is joined by gathering up armfuls of said leaves & pelting the opposing party until all concerned are worn out, have twigs in their hair, crumbled bits in their socks & underwear and all the leaves are once again thoroughly spread over the lawn where they belong in the first place. Obviously this was great fun & every autumn when I was small this is just what my cousins and I did.
Sadly there came a day when raking leaves was no longer anticipated with delight - that's the day when I was TOLD to rake them. Suddenly it was a chore!

Still there was something after the raking was over to look forward too - burning the leaves with my father. I loved watching them crinkle up in the flames while the smoke swirled up my nose and made me sneeze.

Now in the fall I sometimes gather a handful of maple leaves and burn them in the fireplace just to remember...

Smoke represents perhaps the most important aspect of perfume – its beginning. Even its modern name is derived from an antique term that means “to smoke through".

Fire From Heaven is blended from classic ancient incenses: Frankincense, Myrrh, Opopanax, Cedar, Sandalwood, Styrax & Labdanum. But the perfume's scent is subtle. Fire From Heaven is the memory of smoke...

A fresh clean scent composed of Rain Drops, Leaf Buds, Wet Twigs, Tree Sap, Bark, Mossy Earth and the faintest hint of Spring. This perfume is inspired by one of my favorite poems, Black March by Stevie Smith. It begins: I have a friend at the end of the world. His name is a breath of fresh air.

The poem ends:

But whatever
new names I give him
he is still an old friend
he says
Whatever names
you give me
I am a breath of fresh air
a change for you

I have thought about a perfume that reflects this poem for years. Now, it is finished. Both the poem and my perfume contain a secret that you must discover for yourself and that's the Metamorphosis of Black March.

SILENT was first presented in October 2009 alongside the womens ready-to-wear collections in Paris. The range offers beautifully finished mens and womens styles in jersey, knits and woven fabrics - as well as leather outerwear, shoes, and accessories crafted from carefully selected materials.

I am inspired by… a bunch of things. Most often by visual artists and travelling.

My fashion sense comes from… picturing a style, then developing it.

My last fashion indulgence was… a few pieces from the Milieu collection by Song for the Mute. Couldn't resist, awesome collection.  Gary & Dean Style icon?
Gary: Rei Kawakubo - Amazing Japanese vision of turning fabric into style through mending, blending, and gender-bending.

Dean: I am always fascinated by David Hockney... and also Kate Bush and Chloe Sevigny stand out in my mind.

The Best thing about what I do is?
Gary: Working with people with passion and commitment, plus meeting all types of people who reaffirm that through quiet honesty and kindness plus application of my training, you can make profound differences in their lives.

As all round fasion icon people, I would have to say Cary Grant... Sophisticated, well dressed, well spoken, funny and good looking. and Vivienne Westwood. - ever since the punk days, she has been original and great, doesn't take herself too seriously and will publish a really bad photo of herself. There are only one of these people ever. Also, Isabella Rossellini and Angelica Houston....... both just keep getting better and better with age and are both incredibly stylish women..... must be the family stables they come from!

Lately I am listening to…A real mixture... Patti Smith, The Smiths, Al Jarreau, Al Green Wild Beasts, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Immelda May....even a bit of Earth Wind and Fire...all mixed together with early Blondie!

My latest wardrobe addition is... two great pairs of pants, one from Song for the Mute by Lyna Ty and Melvin Tanaya and the other pair from Silent by Damir Doma, all great designers...  Joseph I get inspiration from... Looking at blogs and coming into Fallow. Finding something that suits my personality.

My most treasured piece is… a Friedrich Grey Jacket from a couple of years ago. My first discovery at Fallow....thanks Lisa!

Right now I am wearing… a Claude Maus Knit and some comfortable Harem Pants. Sooooo Cold.

My latest wardrobe addition is… just recently purchased an Edwin Varsity jacket for winter with suede sleeves. Also purchased a Dr Denim Caramel Pea Coat for the colder days.
My most treasured piece… would be my beanies hahaha no. It would have to be my Claude Maus hooded leather jacket.
Right now I’m listening to…I've been listen to alot of Post Hardcore but these bands would be my favourties at the moment.Touche Amore, Title Fight, Pianos Become The Teeth, Defeater, and La Dispute.

Also I have been listening to a lot if instrumental music... anything by Mogwai or Explosions In The Sky. So good to relax and fall asleep to.

Martin My favourite label at the moment is… probably Song for the Mute right now. Their latest collection was amazing. My other favourite labels that I love are Chronicles of Never and Silent.
My friends would buy me a… my friends will usually ask me what I want before buying me anything, I'm particularly hard to buy for. But otherwise Beatles memorabilia or anything to do with 50s, 60s music is a safe bet.

Lately I am listening to… As I said in the last question I'm a huge fan of 50's and 60's music. Artists like The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, and 70's punk bands like The Stooges and The Clash are definitely up there for me. I don't usually enjoy current day music but I love Radiohead also. I could list so many bands there wouldn't be any room left, but a few of my favourite songs include Come Together - The Beatles, Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd, Imagine - John Lennon, Search and Destroy - Iggy and the Stooges and Idioteque - Radiohead.  Beau Your influences in design… are Ann Demeulemeester, Damir Doma, Rick Owens, Rad Hourani, Odyn Vovk and Song For The Mute.

The last place I visited… was Brisbane Powerhouse, the band 'Inland Sea' have a residency there every friday night at 6pm during July. Bliss.

I am…. looking forward to my friends from 'Inland Sea' releasing thier new album that they are recording. Thier previous EP 'Traitor' is on iTunes and can be picked up at JB Hi-Fi.FALLOW.

Polar Desert takes inspiration from the universe’s life cycle. The first stage is duality and contrast. Then, every half a million years when the Earth’s magnetic fields somersault there is a return to unity and one-ness.
